INFANT NUTRITION – MOTHER’S MILK 2

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Herbal

Breast milk, especially the very first secretion called colostrum, contains enzyme-like substances, nutritive salts and vitamins, some of which are known to us but others unknown; these cannot be found in any other food in the same quality and proportions. Moreover, breast milk is the source of immunising agents and alexins that protect the baby from diseases. Herein lies one of the greatest secrets of why very young breast-fed babies are immune to certain infections.

The argument that suckling a baby damages a mother’s health and beauty can be refuted as unfounded because there is sufficient evidence to the contrary. A mother who is reasonably healthy actually benefits from breast-feeding, since during the time of nursing, under normal circumstances, the glands with internal and external secretions will function more efficiently and abundantly. The absorption of food and its vitamins is at its best at this time. The womb returns to normal much more easily in nursing mothers than in those who renounce their natural privilege and bottle-feed their offspring. Also, there is no doubt that a lasting psychological rapport and harmony are established between the mother and her breast-fed baby. In this way both mother and child profit by this natural relationship, as is always evident when we refrain from interfering with the Creator’s natural laws.

REMEDIES 2

December 22nd, 2009 Herbal

Fennel (or anise if no fennel is available) belongs to the most common group of household remedies. Fennel, anise, caraway and dill are the so-called ‘warming teas’. Whenever there is anything wrong with your baby’s digestion, a weak fennel infusion will be of great benefit and will help the mother to remedy a temporary indisposition.

Yarrow, given as a very weak infusion, is good for diarrhoea and loss of appetite. If this fails to stop the discharge, add a small pinch of tormentil and give teaspoonfuls of this weak infusion throughout the day.

Goldenrod is a reliable remedy when the kidneys are out of order. The fresh plant extract from this herb, either as Solidago or as an ingredient in Nephrosolid, is one of the best and most effective medicines for the kidneys and the bladder. If you cannot obtain any goldenrod, a weak rose hip or horsetail infusion can be used instead.

Whey concentrate {Molkosan) is a good antiseptic for minor injuries. This is a natural lactic acid product which can be used in the same way as iodine, although it is certainly less harmful than iodine.

Hypericum can also be used as an antiseptic, and dabbed on externally. Dr Joseph Schier and other well-known paediatricians have recommended this simple remedy made from St John’s wort even for the prevention of tetanus.

SEX AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES: HOW WOULD YOU KNOW IF YOU HAD AN STD?

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction

If you’re lucky you will get symptoms like an unusual discharge from the vagina or penis; painful intercourse; sores, lumps, blisters or rashes on the genitals; burning or stinging when you pass urine and so on.

If you’re a little less lucky you won’t have symptoms but your partner will and they will tell you about it so that you can both be checked out and treated. One of the ways we can minimize the damage and prevent an STD spreading is a procedure known as ‘contact tracing’. This is where a person who finds out they have a sexually transmissible disease makes sure that any possible recent sexual contacts are notified that they are at risk and should be checked out or treated. ‘He was six foot two, blond and had a great smile’ is going to make it hard to identify a casual encounter, but you get the point.

Those who are even less lucky will not have a clue until it’s too late. Unfortunately with some infections, like chlamydia, a lot of people will fall into this last category. You can look and feel completely healthy and still have an STD. Because of this, it pays to have what we in the business call ‘a high index of suspicion’. If you think there is a possibility that you have been in contact with an infected person, or you have had unprotected intercourse with a new partner, it’s worth getting a checkup just to be sure.

REMEDIES

Household remedies and other medicines should be chosen with the greatest care. Babies react quickly to even the smallest dose and can tolerate only very light stimulants without suffering ill effects. This is especially true of teas (herbal infusions) and great care must be taken because an apparently harmless herbal tea can trigger serious upsets.

Homoeopathic remedies are ideal for the treatment of children. In fact, babies should only be given such remedies and it is lamentable that paediatricians do not prescribe them more frequently. Many allopathic drugs do more harm than good even for adults, so how much less would a young child be able to cope with their adverse effects? The amazing results achieved by homoeopathy should convince many doubters; they cannot be explained away as being ‘imaginary’ or ‘psychological’ effects, as some opponents try to do, for it can hardly be expected that babies and young

children imagine these things.

It should be stressed again that infusions of herbs (teas) for small children should be very weak indeed, barely coloured. The herbs listed below have been found to be effective.

SEX AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES: SAFE SEX. IS IT POSSIBLE?

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction

It is often said that there is no such thing as totally safe sex (except masturbation on your own) and that the campaigns to increase condom usage fail to take into account that condoms can break in action. They even changed the expression ‘safe sex’ to the more accurate ‘safer sex’. It’s true that sex education is still in a process of evolution and we need to know where the misunderstandings are so that the information can be adjusted to account for them. Moreover, it is becoming more and more obvious that safer sex instructions need to be detailed enough so that there can be no room for error. It is not enough to say ‘use a condom’ without making it clear that putting it on at the last minute, just in time to catch the ejaculated semen, may be too late. Many people don’t realize that you needn’t actually ejaculate to pass on an infection. In particular syphilis, genital herpes and warts just need skin to skin contact, so for protection the condom needs to be put on before there is any genital contact at all.

It also helps to know things like how to put a condom on and take it off again correctly, that you need to keep squeezing the teat, at the end until the condom is rolled right down to the base of the penis, and that using a water-based lubricant helps to prevent the condom from breaking.

BATHS

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Herbal

Frequent baths are absolutely essential for a baby, not only for hygienic reasons but also because of their importance in maintaining proper skin activity. Bathing removes congestions and stimulates the functions of internal organs and the endocrine glands. We must not forget that the baby had been in the warm, even temperature of the mother’s womb for nine months, protected from the discomforts of the outside world and hidden under the mother’s heart. The newborn baby is suddenly introduced into a much cooler environment to which its little body has to adapt. For this reason the baby’s first baths should never be hotter than blood temperature, that is, not more than 37 °C (98-6°F). In summer the water may even be a little cooler, especially if the water has been warmed by the sun. The lively splashing and joyful shouts bear witness to the pleasures babies derive from their baths. This can also be seen in their frequent protests at being taken out of the bath when they evidently think they should be allowed to stay longer.

Any medicinal additions to a baby’s bath should be chosen with the greatest care, since they can do much harm. It is impossible to stop babies from sucking their wet fingers and swallowing some of the bath water.

SEX AND CONTRACEPTION: FEMIDOM

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction

One new product called the Femidom or female condom recently went on sale in Switzerland to a mixed reception. It consists of a firm outer ring with a loose bag attached, a bit like the windsocks you see at an airfield. The bag is inserted up into the vagina, and the firm ring remains on the outside, protecting the vulva. Some people said it was like having sex with a kitchen tidy bag. Others preferred the fact that they didn’t have to interrupt intercourse to put it in. Women with older male partners say that the female condom has an advantage for them because it is loose fitting, and the older man is less likely to lose his erection than with a regular condom. The added advantage of the female condom is that it gives increased protection against sexually transmitted diseases of the vulva. Actually, the same product is used as an anal condom to protect male homosexuals from STDs during anal intercourse.

Newer ‘morning after’ pills, male contraceptive pills, pregnancy vaccines and hormone implants are all on the horizon as researchers try to meet the needs of people in different situations.

Whatever contraception you decide is best for you, now or in the future, making a choice means confronting your attitudes and behaviors about sex, and getting in touch with the sexual attitudes of your partner.

INFANT CARE

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Herbal

Experience being a good teacher, no doubt many of our parents’ methods in caring for their children were very good. Some of their ways, however, were quite wrong, since they were based on old customs that do not meet the demands of modern hygiene. Just think of the almost superstitious fear of water which led them to believe that bathing, especially if frequent, was bad for the health. There are still some older people who have never sat in a bath tub and, what is more, who actually boast about it! When you read that in days gone by children were carefully protected from exposure to light, air, sun and water, so that they would not catch cold, you may smile for knowing better, thinking it was a story from the ancient past. But not so; it was the custom in our parents’ or grandparents’ time. Again, it was also feared that children would develop crooked limbs unless they were so tightly wrapped that they were rendered practically immobile. Even today in some parts of Italy we find evidence of babies so bandaged up that they look like mummies. It is, therefore, not surprising that infant mortality was once much greater than it is today.

SEX AND CONTRACEPTION: ALTERNATIVE CONTRACEPTIVE

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction

There is no such thing as the perfect contraceptive, so the best you can hope for is a fair compromise. Negotiating contraceptive options, like negotiating safer sex, takes some communication skills and a degree of self-confidence. That means knowing what your needs are, and what is non-negotiable for you. As an example, there is no point in a man deciding that the best alternative for him is for his partner to have an IUD inserted if she has no intention whatsoever of letting one anywhere near her.

There are some people who just can’t seem to find a contraceptive option that suits them. So the search for more alternatives continues, and the contraceptive options in the future will need to take into account more than reliability and safety. There is absolutely no point in a company expending enormous amounts of money and resources on a product that nobody wants to use, so the first step will always be to ask how this method fits into a person’s sex life.

INFERTILITY

Comments Off
December 22nd, 2009 Herbal

Infertility – the Pros and Cons of Hormone Treatment Women who would love to have children but remain childless often do everything in their power to fulfil their natural desire. This is understandable, since an unfulfilled yearning for children may lead to severe mental and emotional suffering. There are, of course, some women who have little or no desire at all for a child. Although they do not suffer by not having children, they do miss out on the joys of motherhood and the many natural pleasures which children bring to the home.

Some, however, immediately resort to the alternative course to overcome infertility since it may possibly assure quicker results, that of hormone treatment, especially treatment with gonadotropins. There are, however, certain risks involved. The degree of sensitivity of the female body varies greatly from one individual to the next and it is not easy for a doctor to find the right dose. Most people will be aware of the unpredictable results that an overdose of hormones can have. It is possible that a number of eggs become ready to be fertilised, resulting in twins, triplets or an even greater number of children. This would certainly be too much of a good thing, even for the woman who may have suffered previously on account of her childlessness. It is therefore preferable to try out the first solution, stimulating the hormone-producing glands in a natural way. Only if these efforts fail should one contemplate hormone treatment as a last resort.
